The pictures below are of a MacBook Pro M2 that came into us recently for repair. The customer, who found us through an online search, brought in their MacBook Pro 13” M1 A2338 because the device had been suffering from a cracked screen for several weeks. Recently, the screen went completely black, rendering the laptop unusable. This sudden change prompted the customer to seek professional repair services. Screens going completely black after a crack is something we see all the time on these M2 Pro’s.
Symptoms and Diagnosis:
The MacBook Pro exhibited a cracked screen that had progressively worsened over time. The display eventually went entirely black. Diagnosing a black screen can be complex, as it may result from various issues, including display damage or internal component failures. Our team used a stereo microscope to examine the device closely. We identified that the crack in the LCD was the primary issue causing the screen to fail.
Repair Process:
The repair process was carried out with precision, focusing on restoring the MacBook Pro’s display functionality:
- Initial Disassembly: We began by removing the bottom plate of the MacBook Pro to access the internal components. This step also involved disconnecting the battery to ensure safety throughout the repair process.
- Separation of Components: Next, we detached the top case assembly from the display assembly. This step required careful handling to avoid damaging any internal parts. We used a heat plate to soften the adhesive holding the cracked LCD in place, making it easier to remove without causing further damage.
- Removal of the Damaged LCD: The cracked LCD was extracted using a razor blade and an ultra-thin adhesive cutting tool. After removing the damaged screen, we cleaned the display assembly thoroughly to remove old adhesive and any debris. This cleaning process was crucial to ensure that the new LCD would adhere properly and function optimally.
- Installation of the New LCD: With the display assembly prepped, we applied new adhesive and Tesa tape to secure the replacement LCD panel. Precision was key during this step to ensure that the new LCD was aligned correctly and firmly attached. We then installed the new LCD panel into the display assembly and reconnected it to the top case.
- Final Assembly and Testing: After reassembling the device, we reconnected the battery and performed thorough tests to verify that the new LCD was functioning correctly. We checked the display for proper operation and ensured that the screen was fully operational before preparing the MacBook Pro for pickup.
The repair was relatively straightforward, with the main challenge being ensuring that the backlight was free of dust and debris. We successfully reused the customer’s original display assembly, which helped maintain the quality of the repair and reduced overall costs.
